Ian Watchorn began his professional career as a maker and repairer of musical instruments in Sydney, Australia in 1976. In 1979 he moved his workshop to Canberra, and in 1982 moved abroad to study musical instrument conservation at the Germanisches National Museum in Nurnberg Germany under Friedemann Hellwig and John Henry van der Meer.
In 1984 he accepted the post of conservator at the GNM, and was acting senior conservator before returning to Sydney to work on the conservation and collection development of the music exhibitions at the Powerhouse Museum. Following this he re-established his private studio in Melbourne where he has been working since 1990.
